Children Hearing Services

High-quality, affordable and ethical hearing services for your child.

Why is hearing so important in childhood?

An undiagnosed hearing loss, whether temporary or permanent, in the early stages of childhood (0–8 years) can negatively impact your child's development. At Peak Hearing, we specialise in childhood hearing loss. You can rely on our extensive experience in the diagnosis of hearing loss in children and our thorough understanding of the latest management pathways.

If you suspect that your child may have hearing issues, book them in for a paediatric audiology screening assessment. This quick procedure will help us to establish if hearing loss has occurred, and whether further assessment and management of the condition is required.

Why is hearing important?
Auditory Processing - Child

Auditory processing disorders in children

Auditory processing disorders often occur in children who experience significant difficulty hearing in challenging environments such as in the classroom, when there are multiple speakers present or when competing external noise is present.

If your child has difficulty hearing, recognising, organising and interpreting sounds, particularly in complex and noisy environments, they may have an auditory processing disorder. Book an auditory processing assessment with the hearing specialists at Peak Hearing today.

How hearing loss happens

Hearing loss is caused by damage to one or more parts
of the auditory pathway. It is classified into three types.

Sensorineural

Sensorineural hearing loss

Caused by damage or disease to the cochlea (the hearing organ deep inside our ears), and/or the pathway up to the hearing centre of the brain. This hearing loss is typically permanent in nature.

Conductive

Conductive hearing loss

Caused by damage or disease that occurs anywhere along the hearing pathway – from the visible parts of the ear, past the eardrum and through to the middle ear. This type of hearing loss may be temporary or permanent.

Mixed

Mixed hearing
loss

A combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, this type of hearing loss may be temporary or permanent.

Paediatric Diagnostic Audiology Assessment

Let us conduct a comprehensive diagnostic assessment for your child. The clinic is fitted and calibrated to industry standards for the assessment of all children from late infancy (8 months) through to late childhood (16 years). We will make a thorough assessment of the hearing pathway for each ear, and follow up with family centred case management and an individual care plan.

Paediatric Chronic CHL Review Audiology Assessment

Our primary audiologist specialises in this area of audiology, and will conduct a thorough assessment of your child's hearing pathway to identify an problems with sound transmission through the outer and middle ear. Following the assessment, we will provide you with a comprehensive management and individual care plan to ensure you're appraised of all the options and have a clear path towards optimising your child's hearing for life.

Paediatric pre- and post-ENT audiology assessment

Some Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists require a hearing assessment to be carried out before (and sometimes after) their consultation and/or treatment. At times, this can also help provide the specialist with more information to better triage the referral.

Alison specialises in hearing disorders related to the middle ear (conductive hearing loss) and is currently completing her PhD in this area (see blog). During this assessment, she will thoroughly examine the hearing pathway for each ear, and provide family centred management and an individual care plan to the family.

Paediatric Screening Assessment / School Readiness Assessment

We'll carry out a quick screen of the hearing pathway to assess hearing. This is a great option when minor concerns have been identified. The assessment helps to exclude hearing loss and determine if further assessment is necessary. We will provide subsequent assessment at a reduced fee.

Paediatric Auditory Processing Assessment

If your child has difficulty recognising, organising and interpreting complex sounds around them, they may have an auditory processing disorder. This is typically present in children with normal hearing (or a past or present conductive hearing loss) who experience significant difficulty listening in a challenging environment, such as school, when others are speaking or when competing noises are present.

Hearing protection consultations (inc ear impressions and order)

As we are local to the Isaac Region, we understand how much of a toll living and working in a region linked with mining and industrial work, can take on hearing. We believe that the importance of protecting our client's hearing when working under these conditions cannot be understated. This is why we provide professional advice and recommendations for hearing protection, including ear impressions for a customised fit and order.
