High-quality, affordable and ethical diagnostic and rehabilitative hearing services.
Why is hearing so important for adults?
An estimated one in six adults in Australia are living with a permanent hearing loss. Hearing plays a crucial role in every aspect of our lives including social, psychological, work and education. And hearing loss, whether permanent or temporary, has a major impact on our ability to function day-to-day.
What's more, research indicates that hearing loss is the leading and most preventable risk factor for dementia. This means that people who suffer hearing loss, are at increased risk of developing dementia. Early diagnosis and hearing rehabilitation can improve outcomes for adults, helping them to cope better in all areas of life.

Auditory processing disorders in adults
Adults with normal hearing may find it difficult to recognize, organize and interpret sounds in complex and noisy environments. This may indicate the presence of an auditory processing disorder.
If you have difficulty hearing in environments where there are multiple speakers present or when competing external noise is present, make an appointment for an auditory processing disorder assessment at Peak Hearing today.
How hearing loss happens
Hearing loss is caused by damage to one or more parts of the auditory pathway. It is classified into three types.

Sensorineural hearing loss
Caused by damage or disease to the cochlea (the hearing organ deep inside our ears), and/or the pathway up to the hearing centre of the brain. This hearing loss is typically permanent in nature.

Conductive hearing loss
Caused by damage or disease that occurs anywhere along the hearing pathway – from the visible parts of the ear, past the eardrum and through to the middle ear. This type of hearing loss may be temporary or permanent.

Mixed hearing
loss
A combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, this type of hearing loss may be temporary or permanent.
